Born in Featherston, Richard Mathieson studied at Elam Art School and has lived in Auckland ever since. He has been extensively involved in sculpture galleries and projects including Star Art, Medal Art, Sculpture in the Gardens, and Summer of Sculpture.
Criss Cross is one of a series of 4 works Mathieson made for Shadow Casters, a group show at the McPherson Gallery, Auckland. This sculpture has a rigid and repetitive mathematical structure. It is abstract but there is also a strong figurative element with a 'hands on hips' stance.
The one pour bronze sand casting retains the texture of the green sand mould and the casting has received a liver of sulphur, cupric nitrate patina.
